» Swim training - update:For all that were not at swim 12/03/08. Jen took her 1st coaching session. For the 15 plus of us that did turn up I'm sure you'll all agree having a Coach will prove its worth and tonight's session was hard but well structured. Thanks Jen. After speaking to Jen tonight she will be e-mailing me the following Mon & Wed nights programmes in advance so I will be bringing down to swim. If I'm not able to attend I will pass on to some one who is. Also if anyone has a particular swimming goal/time that they wish to reach/aim for this coming racing season Jen is willing to write you out your own personal programme. Take advantage gang....Regards Reg

» TD and REFEREE TRAINING DAY: As all Clubs are required to supply a TD and Referee for each event they are holding this year, this is a golden opportunity to be trained to a high standard by a dedicated training team. I know this is eating into training and personal time but are any of you interested in attending this? Unfortunately from our club which has a lot of members and which disappoints me, Jo is currently the only person signed up. We have had nobody replying to previous e-mail sent out by Cathy. Even if you replied to let me know why you cant do would be nice. So I can then inform TI why we are only providing 1 person instead of the 4 required.
Any takers? Please let me know if you are interested in attending. regswallow@hotmail.com  Details below.

TD and REFEREE TRAINING DAY
The Ulster Branch in conjunction with Triathlon Ireland are holding a training day for Technical Delegates and Referees.
Date: Saturday 15th March 2008
Time: 10:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs
Venue: The Comfort Hotel, Antrim
The Comfort Hotel is in Antrim on the main roundabout beside Junction One (out of town shopping complex) on the M2 out of Belfast (approx 1/2 hour from Belfast)
Lunch and coffee will be supplied.

» Swim training - Wed 12th March: Get a preview of the drills at swim training on Wednesday evening. Don't worry about the meaning of some of the drills as these will be explained on Wednesday (doc) (pdf)

» New swim coach: Our new swim coach Jen, was poolside on Wed 5th March checking out our technique and getting a feel for the task ahead of her. She will be poolside again on Wed 12 March, offering advice on technique and suggesting new drills for all levels of swimmer. After this date Jen will be down on the last Wednesday of each month, 26th Mar, 30th Apr etc. Come along and avail of Jen's expertise.

» Coach of the year: Local sports stars glittered at the Antrim Sports Advisory Association's recent awards ceremony held in Antrim. Sporting stars from across the Antrim borough picked up an array of trophies for their achievements, including our very own Tommy Linton who scooped the Coach of the Year award. HiElbow would like to congratulate Tommy on this well deserved achievement....does that mean you'll take it easy on us from now on?

It was with great pleasure that I was awarded 'Coach of Year' at the Antrim Sports Association awards night on 29/2/08. I can honestly say I was shocked to win it and would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in the past (and present). As you know the club had its 10th birthday last year and during that time I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with some very good friends within the club. I personally feel the club is on 'the up'. Training, although tough is 'fun' and we currently have a solid core that is growing which in turn takes pressure off certain key individuals. Its especially pleasing to see a social side opening up, this will strengthen the bond even more.
Good luck during this season and I hope you succeed in your personal quests and I hope to see you at 'the linton bike ride' on 29/3/08 and later that night in Belfast. .....Tommy

» Phoenix GP: Congratulations to Alan, Bryce and Matt from our 'elitest centurions' who stormed home in top ten positions in Sundays Phoenix GP. With over 80 of NI's top cyclists entering it was fantastic to see the three Triathletes take top spots. A few pictures to show the boys hard at it.....and the obvious pain in their legs at his stage!

» Membership 2008: just a reminder that the 2007 TI membership runs out at the end of February and if you intend to race/train this year you only have a few days left to sort your TI membership. In addition to the TI membership we also need you to complete and submit your 2008 HiElbow membership asap.  The deadline for this is also the end of February. HiElbow membership forms for 2008 are now available (doc) (pdf). Triathlon Ireland membership web page.

» Buy and sell triathlon gear:

A new website called www.triathlontrader.co.uk has been setup and its owner has asked for us to spread the word. It is a classifieds website dedicated to triathletes and multi-sport athletes. It's fairly new and doesn't have a lot on it yet, but it might get more stuff of interest soon.

Please note that the club also has a buy and sell section on the forum for trading within the club.

» What's happening Feb '08

  • I hope you've all had a chance to complete your memberships for Triathlon Ireland as HiElbow membership forms for 2008 are now available (doc) (pdf) I'll bring copies to swim next week.
  • We've finally managed to get a suitable date for the 'Linton Special' . Plans for a great day (and night) are in place for Saturday 29th March . The Saturday morning bike will kick off at 9am from Ellie Mays and follow the back road to Ballygalley, coffee at Pinky Moons in Larne and back via Glenoe, roughly 50 miles. And then for the bit we all enjoy....the night out! Gary S has very kindly agreed to organise the function room in Pizza Express (Belfast City Centre). This will no doubtedly prove to be messy so we thought keeping us all locked in one room (away from the public) was the best option. Can you let me know asap via email if you are keen to join the chaos that is a night out with HiElbow/Centurion members as we need to confirm numbers. info@hielbow.co.uk

» 2008 Club Kit To all club members please see here for the final draft of the kit the club will be wearing this year. I hope you all like. What I need from you all now is to put your order in for the kit. The more orders the cheaper it works out. Don't forget the club subsidising by 50%. As most of you are aware I'm away now till 15th Feb, at which point on my return I will check my e-mails and hopefully put the order in for the kit. It will then take 6-8 weeks for delivery. Just in time for Titanic Duathlon in APR.

Cathy will be taking stock of samples shortly so please get in touch with Cathy to look at and try on for sizing purposes. Please look at the sizing chart. Once you have decided fill out application form and e-mail back to me.

If you wish to go on website and check out there kit breakdown, pictures, notes etc  it is www.spiuk.co.uk  and you want to look at the Fully Customised Triathlon Racewear.

If you do have any questions just e-mail me. I will be checking my e-mails every so often so will try and get back to you........Reg.

» Seeking all Junior Development Enthusiasts Part of the Triathlon Ulster junior strategy is to encourage clubs to have a junior coordinator. Sport NI are hosting Junior Club Development workshops - over 2 nights 12&13 Feb from 6.30-9.30pm at PEC. Triathlon Ulster can cover cost of course if any members of your club wish to attend this training.
Module 1: Action Planning for Junior Club Development
Module 2: Establishing School and/or Club links
This is a great opportunity for anyone who is looking to have an impact of the Triathletes of tomorrow. Anyone interested, please contact Patricia Roe: pquinnroe@yahoo.com

» Vote for the 2008 Club triathlon Every year the club chooses a triathlon event were members are encouraged to turn out in force. This year members will have the opportunity to vote for the club triathlon from a shortlist of events drawn up by the committee. All the triathlons shortlisted are olympic distance, with one (Loughrea) having both a sprint distance and olympic distance event.

Kilkee (Sat 28th June)
Dublin City (Sat 30th August)
Loughrea (Sat 13th September)

These triathlons have been purposely chosen to be further away than normal and will probably involve an overnight stay. Being further away gives us the opportunity to travel together, get to know other club members, experience a new triathlon event and enjoy a bit of criac either before or after the event.

Plan to come along this year. You will get notification shortly via email of the special web page on which to make your vote. If you are a member and don't get this email and still want to vote, give Cathy your email address, email her on info@hielbow.co.uk

The committee will look at the results in March/April and let you know what triathlon has been choosen for the "2008 Club Triathlon". You can then go ahead and organise accommodation etc.

» New to Triathlon and close to Dublin? Triathlon Ireland have had a lot of enquiries from people looking to get involved in out sport. We have decided to run a pilot programme for 'Those new to Traithlon'. Please email newjoiner@triathlonireland.com with any queries. The first Meet and Train session is on Sat 26th January 2008 meeting at the Papal Cross, Phoenix Park at 9.30am - 11.00 for cycle training and 11.00 - 12.00 for run training. Poster.pdf

» What's happening - Dec 07/Jan 08?

  • Antrim Forum pool is closed between the 15th Dec and the 2nd January.......no excuse not to train though!
  • For those of you who use Antrim Forum you will probably have noticed a few additional classes being run, including spin. The guy who runs these classes has offered to host a weekly hielbow spin class. I spoke to him last night and we discussed this happening on a Monday or Wednesday night 6.15pm to 7.15pm. I said I would see what the interest would be. This would be useful during the winter so would be good to look at starting January, will you let me know if you would be interested in this? email info@hielbow.co.uk
  • With the festive season upon us and the expectation that we will all be eating and drinking far too much don't forget the annual Lap the Lough bike on the 29th December . We'll kick off at 9am from Ellie Mays , normal rules apply....if your late you'll have to catch up and if you get dropped I'll be right there with you!
  • The Ulster Branch AGM is expected to take place in mid January. Stewart Tosh, Thomas Elliott and Tommy Linton won't be seeking re-election. It's important that the committee continues to thrive and introduce new blood. With this in mind it's important that the clubs attend the AGM. Failure to see any commitment toward the regional committee from the clubs may see its demise which will be detrimental toward races, coaching and funding. If anyone is interested in the above Tommy/Stewart/Thomas will be able to give you more information on commitment required.

» Hielbow/Centurians Winter cycling All If only the summer weather had been as good as the autumn!  We have had a really good spell of dry weather and with that the numbers at cycling have been impressive. We are into the high teens most Saturdays,  but with the onset of cold and wet winter mornings we will see what you are all made off then.  The split into 2 groups after an hour or so seems to have worked.  The more regular you attend the more you will gel and build up friendships within a group.  You also may improve that much that you move up a group, or even start a group all by yourself!!! Anyway keep up the effort levels, and get a goal to train towards for next year.  We have a lot of talent and a fair degree of ambition within our ranks.  We all have individual goals at all levels from Irish championship wins to ironman finishes.  These goals are what drag you out of bed in the winter mornings to freeze your nuts off.(or equivalent!!)   The whole idea about the centurions was another way to keep you motivated.  We all work better as a team, and so if the team also have a goal that we can all work towards, then we all raise our game, and get helped along.  Last year we cycled from Mizen Head to Malin Head, 500 miles in 4 days and raised £11,000 for charity along the way.  Better still, we had great craic and our cycling improved by leaps and bounds. So if you haven't joined the Centurion ranks yet, you need to start training towards completing one of our 100 mile training rides.  Next years Centurion goal is The Midsummer's Madness.   That is too cycle 200 miles in one day.  So get training!!  The 8am start on Saturdays from Ellie Mays will remain for another few weeks, as the clocks change this weekend and will give us more daylight in the mornings for a week or two.  I estimate it will convert to the 9am start from the 1st December.  I will keep you updated. Ian Lyle

» HiElbow Club AGM & Prize Giving: A combination of the club AGM and Awards will be take place at the Holiday Inn Express, Antrim (beside Junction 1) on Friday, 30/11/07 starting at 7pm.  Anyone wanting to eat afterwards can avail of numerous restaurants close by. If you have any issues that you want raised, please EMAIL Joanne before 20/11/07

» Latest happenings-06/08/07:The Hi Elbow Club's Centurions cycle training group had another 100 miler on Sunday 15th July 2007.  It was a pleasant summers day, yes we did get one. So we headed for Portadown, followed the cycle path along the Bann and into Newry, returning home via Rathfriland and Banbridge.  The Olive Tree coffee stop in Newry was one of the best to date, although it was hard to cycle after all that food.  Three new Centurions earned their helmets, namely Matt Wilson, Larry McAteer and Joanne Kee. Well done, as not one of you seemed in any distress. The centurion group will be setting new targets for next year.  If you want to get involved in some serious cycle training, you need to show commitment. That means getting in the saddle with a desire to improve.  We will hold another 100 miler in September for those who want to join the merry band, and get the kit before the next clothing order.  After that, we will knuckle down to our usual regular group cycles, at a fair old lick.  If you can't keep up, we won't be around to hear your complaints.   Centurions have been travelling all over the place in the last few weeks, between holidays and racing.  Most people are returning from their holidays, and so it will be interesting to see if the break recharged their batteries for a few 30 sign sprints.  There has been a lot of racing with Brian winning Lisburn and Castlewellan, Matt winning the Ulster Duathlon Champs, and the rest of us getting a few top 10 finishes and age group wins.  Something must be working.  Gary Stewart tipped his toes into the world of TT, and with no tri bars, and 2 full water bottles, managed an incredible 23.08mins for 10 miles on his first effort. Lough Neagh is approaching fast.  Swim practice is on the next 2 Thursdays.  If your not racing, please please please make yourself available for marshalling and setting up the course. Upcoming events The triathlon scene rumbles on, but for a bit of a difference a few of us will be entering the following, The Mourne Sportive - 100 miles and 3000 metres of climbing. Sun 12/8/07 - 8am start If you fancy it, let me know by 5 pm on Tuesday, as I am entering names by telephone to the organiser. http://www.dromaracc.co.uk/sportive/home.html

This years Inishowen 100 is on Sunday 19th August. Last year we had more than 200 entrants with 100 of those entering on the morning of the event. This made things much more difficult to organize... ordering food, printing certificates etc at the last minute and we want to encourage everyone to enter for the event in good time.

For this reason the standard entry fee of £20 will be increased to £25 after the 10th August.

So please...

(1) make a committment to take part in this great event ,

(2) enter before the 10th August for £20, and

(3) enjoy a great day's cycling on Aug 19th

For those who want to try a TT before the end of the season, Old Bleach have 2 planned in August and invite us to take part.

Tues 7/8/07 - 25 mile TT - start 7pm at Oldwood Road, opposite the Ramble Inn

Tues 21/8/07 - 10 mile TT - start 7pm at same place.

Lastly, like all things, I expext to see a few faces dissappearing from the ranks, and a few new ones joining.  It has been good to see Toshy, Jonny, Reg Kumar, Gary McCappin and Cathy Thompson out with us in recent weeks.  None has looked out of their depth, and I hope that all get stuck into the centurion training in the future. (Ian Lyle)

» Latest happenings-10/07/07: Well done to all the troops who had a go at the Half Ireman in Groomsport. I make it that all the Hi Elbow members and centurians finished. It was a hard old race, particularly the run. Well done to Matt who finished a terrific 2nd, running down the leader all the way. A special mention also to Jo Anne. Jo Anne trained hard all winter, especially on the bike, and it great to see all that hard work paying off on sunday with a good finish. We also won the relay event with a team comprising Ed Cooke, Gary Stewart and Alan Graham. I've heard it got Gaz's competitive juices flowing, and he has already went out and bought a pair of running shoes from Matt. This Friday 13th we are having another one of our centurian tours. As the wind is forecast to blow a 5mph south westerly, it looks like the route will be Pordadown and the cycle path down to Newry. Depending on how many miles that works out, the route back will be varied so we get in the 100. That may mean Warrenpoint after Newry. We start at 8am sharp at Ellie Mays. With quite a few away on holidays, we will be missing a couple of regulars, but Gaz, Ed, Bryce,Daren, and Alan are confirmed. Matt is also coming to gain his centurian status, while Gary Bloomer has planned to do his run in Majorca, and text us his video diary. Other club members are invited. I've heard Jo Anne, Bob and Gary McCappin considering it, all in the knowledge that they gain the right to wear the centurian kit if they complete the 100. Finally, good luck to Brian and Ed Cooke who are both competing at the Irish Elite triathlon champs this weekend. (Ian Lyle)

» Mizen to Malin cycle - report: (Ed McCullagh)

The Muckamore Centurions successfully completed our 4 day cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head last month .  Everything went very smoothly.  18 starters and 18 finishers and all together.  We had been expecting a tail wind for most of our journey, but unfortunately it was mostly strong headwinds which made each day in the saddle longer by 1 to 2 hours.  We had a fair amount of rain as well, particularly on day 3, which I wasn't prepared for with only summer kit with me.  I was sore and fatigued for 3 or 4 days after finishing, but the whole trip was a very enjoyable experience.  The route differed slightly from our original intentions due to accommodation availability, here are some of the details.

Day 0 (Wednesday 23 May 07)
Belfast City Airport - fly to Cork Airport - mini-bus to Mizen Head (Barley Cove Beach Hotel)
Day 1 (Thursday 24 May 07)
Mizen Head - Bantry - Kenmare - Killarney - Castleisland - Abbeyfeale - Tarbert (Kirby's Lanterns Hotel) 131 miles.
Beautiful scenery, lots of climbing and stunning descents from Glengariff to Kenmare and on through Molls Gap to Killarney.  Food stop at Arbatus Hotel Killarney (76 miles) where we had our photograph taken with the Irish Sports Minister (see attached).  Weather mostly very good with some rain later in the day.
Day 2 (Friday 25 May 07)
Tarbert - ferry across the Shannon to Killimer - Miltown Malbay - Lisdoonvarnva - Galway - Barna - Clifden (Station House Hotel) 138 miles.
Through the rugged Burren to Galway . Food stop at Donnellys of Barna (90 miles, too late, we were running on empty), then another 48 miles into the wind through stunning Connemara to Clifden.  Weather dry, but strong headwind most of the day.  A very long day in the saddle.
Day 3 (Saturday 26 May 07)
Clifden - Leenaun -  Westport - Castlebar - Swinford - Sligo - Rosses Point (Yeats Country Hotel).  110 miles.
Leaving Clifden in heavy rain for more beautiful Connemara scenery to Westport .  Food stop at Gateway Hotel Swinford (70 miles) and on to Rosses Point .  The shortest day of the trip, but extremely wet making it difficult to keep warm at times.
Day 4 (Sunday 27 May 07)
Rosses Point - Donegal town - Ballybofey – L'derry - Quigley's Point - Carndonagh -  Malin Head. 125 miles.
A very long slow drag from Donegal town to Ballybofey into a strong headwind and long steady climb.  Food stop at Jacksons, Ballybofey (65 miles).  On to Lifford and the last leg of our journey, with more climbing across country from Quigley's Point to Carndonnagh and short sharp climb up to Malin Head for a brief celebration before we were blown off the cliff.  Transfer to Doherty's Pollan Beach Hotel, Ballyliffin for a well deserved celebration.  Weather generally sunny, but very strong headwind all day.

Total distance 504 miles. (Pictures)

» Latest news: Hope you have all recovered from the Tour.
Training
Getting things back on track, there will be biking as usual this weekend, Sat 8am Ellie Mays, and Sunday 8am at Chimney Corner. A few are doing the camlough race on saturday, and Matt/Alan are getting together on saturday afternoon to do a brick session at mallusk. Thursday nights intervals, 6.30pm Ellie Mays. I couldn't make last week and
will also miss next Thursday. But I'll e mail a session out before Thursday and whoever turns up can give it a blast.

Sponsorship
Gary Stewart is in charge of collecting the money for World Vision. I see he has arranged a night out at the Templeton hotel on Sat 23rd June for 8pm. Big Gaz will be there, but what about inviting Alan Knott. We at least need to get a photo with him, and need to give him his 4 jerseys. It would be great to have all the money forwarded and totalled before this date. We could then get a few photos with a cheque and have a few pints
when people aren't too tired after a long day in the saddle. I suggest that you either personally give Gary the sponsorship money by the 22/6/07. It will be interesting to see what our grand total is.

Events
Our next social tour events will be Friday 13th July and a tour of the Innishowen on Sunday 19th August. As both are covering a distance over 100 miles it will be a chance for other people to join the hallowed ranks of the centurions. We could then get another kit order away in August.
The race season is in full flight. Bob and Bryce successfully completed the Lanzorote Ironman. Matt came 4th at the Ballymena 5 mile run and at the Dublin Duathlon. The rascal. Ed Cooke has raced at the British Sprint Tri Champs in Scotland and at Blenheim Triathlon.

There are plenty of other races coming up, with Matt, Bryce and Alan representing Ireland at the European Duathlon Champs in Scotland on the 16/6/07. A few of us are all doing the Half Ireman at Croomsport on the 8/7/07. Lets get as many as possible racing, either as an individual or as a relay team. The first 4 home from a triathlon club win a week in Club La Santa. Ian

» Accomodation advice for Dublin Triathlon next year: Thought id post this as i know some of the club who travelled down to dublin for the Triathlon did not have much joy with their accommodation. This hotel is 6 miles out of the centre in Dundrum which is a lovely place. To use the LUAS to get into town cost 3.90 euro rtn from 6 in morning till 00:30. You can also get your bike into the hotel. The rooms are modern, clean and spacious. Only down fall no bath. I asked for breakfast at 05:30 on morning of the race no problems for them. Though breakfast does not include a Fry Up(Yuk) At a cost of 69 euro per night per room and 13 euro for brekkie it is a bargain. It is in a peaceful location and off the main rd. The name of the place is IMI Residence and the website is www.imi.ie/res . Also for the ones who missed it,the race is a brillant one and well worth entering in 2007. After party also good ask Darren!!! Regards Reg Swallow

» BBC Northern Ireland is looking at the possiblility of commissioning a series called Extreme Challengers. The aim is to follow four athletes from Northern Ireland who are going to take part in Extreme type challenges in 2007 (if possible from Jan to April), ie North Police Marathon, Costa Rica volcano trek, etc… We are of course open to all sports and the more exotic (and scenic !) the location, the better ! The only criteria is really that the event take no more than three days. And we are looking for chatty, entertaining, witty and if possible….. Sane candidates. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please get in touch ! My email is maryann.maguire@bbc.co.uk

» Belfast Marathon Relay, Les Jones and HiElbow aquathon: Meassge from Tommy Linton. Can I personally thank those members who took part in the two relay teams at the Belfast Marathon. There was a lot of unnecessary hassle to enter the teams. My thanks to Terry MacAllister and Bryce Irvine for "doubling up" on the day at short notice. A reminder that the Les Jones 10k is to take place on Friday, 12th May at 7pm from the Mary Peters track. See you there. Unfortunately, the Lisburn half marathon & 10k clash this year with our aquathon on 21/6/06. This aquathon will include the Irish Youth Championships and a large turnout is expected. I will need as many of you as possible to help marshal this event.

» 3 day Ironman: (Message from Hazel and Maureen) We would like to thank all of you who encouraged and helped us to complete the 3 day Ironman event on Saturday 29 April, Sunday 30 April and Monday 1 May. We could not have completed all 3 days without your continued help and support, kind words and encouragement. We would particularly like to thank Tommy for helping us with advice on training in all three areas, encouragement when things were not going so well and always being there to support us and finally coming to Coleraine and cycling with us for two laps, otherwise we would have probably just dilly dallied around like we normally do! Thank you Bryce, Darren and Terry for your help with long cycles and for encouraging text messages; Dearbhla for your words of support and for turning up both at Benone and Belfast even though we had finished and gone home!! What a star! To Colette for helping Maureen fight her way through the crowds wandering across her path on her last mile of the marathon through Ormeau Park and to Margaret, Zoe and Joanne for various text messages of support. Finally, we have achieved a fantastic goal thanks to all of you. Thank you ............... Hazel and Maureen
