» A slightly different challenge!! : All club members..... I am looking at doing something different in the winter season instead of biking, swimming and running I would like a different challenge and came across this, it is nothing like Bob & Bryce's idea of a challenge!!!! This is something we could complete, do as a team and is something different, now I'm open to suggestions from all like is there something closer we could do or a different race/idea etc, its just I saw this and thought...... Ill see if anyone would like to do from club, so if interested Ill put a link on forum and we will see if we can get a team over, mixed, all male/female. Its something else, cause if you like me sometimes I get dragged down with all the swimming, biking & running......Reg Swallow

» Ultra Marathon: (From Reg Swallow) ...... Or as I like to call it 39.2 miles of PAIN. So I don't really know where to start. I took part in this race  18 days ago but what with work and the training camp Ive not been on to write about this horrific experience. . OK im going to try and keep it short and sweet. Starting way Back when our Ultra Man Bob put it on the forum t hen both Kaz and I decided we wanted to do something different training wise. We  decided that  the Connemara Ultra Marathon in Galway was a good idea . This was my 1st mistake, 2nd  aggreeing to do this with Kaz as she can run,  ( is a whippet ) ... and most of all at least she has done a Marathon. Furthest I had run was 15 miles. So months of training go past and Ive run 20 miles as my longest. This was my  3rd mistake I was counting on my endurance from the bike to get me through(It did). Don't get me wrong Ive been pounding the streets getting the miles in as my weight loss will vouch for, Yippee, Anyway 2 months before Kaz gets ill and we have lots of in and outs of hospital, visits, tests etc. Bee all and end all there is no way she is running.... Oh dear not good news in all aspects. She is getting better.
So....First time doing the connemara  Ultra - Weather was brill! Perfect day for the run. Found the hills tough but good going. Legs are still feeling it  now !

Learned a lot from the race however - I under trained and thus found the experience far tougher going as a result. Thanks to all helping out at the water stations and support on the route.
The experience of the race for me, was pure hell. I had set off ice and steady as not to blow with Andy P, Bob had shot off . 9 min mile pace going to about 8:30, not too sure when we hit the 13 mile point , was about 1:50. Was feeding good and felt OK. Mile 18 - 20 went through my 1st little wobble. 20-26, OK but slowing. This is where it all when Pete Tong...........

To give you an idea here's what happened to me:Crossed the line- shattered, dizzy and legs in bits! Blood-sugar levels seriously low when I crossed the line was very close to passing out! -Completely disorientated.
Was desperate for energy -no bananas, no chocolate, no energy drink even available at finish line - hadn't the energy to walk to bag area/figure out where it was or even to get my medal and t-shirt. Thank god Kaz was there- life saver.
Thank god there were such sound people in the race. Really helped lift my spirits afterwards.
So what happened at the 26 mile point, there were various feed stations around where you could leave food and drink. You guessed it my major feed/re-fuel was at this point to help me cover the last 13 miles. Somebody had nicked my stuff. I hit this point at 3:58. So was still on my target time of sub 6 hrs. I mean 2 hrs to cover a half..... how hard could it be. 2hrs 49 minutes later I crossed that finish line to my amazement. Basically I BLEW. I had not eaten anything of substance from 18 -32 miles. I had put fluids in. I was now down to a shuffle and walk. By the end it was a walk and rest. I had power walkers doing the half flying pass me. I am so glad I have done it though and have got the t-shirt. Now the days have passed I'm picking up the positives from this challenge the major one being I have the inner strength to keep going. A MASSIVE well organised event. Glad Kaz was there with me I needed the support especially after when I was in bits. Reg Swallow

» London to Brighton ultra: Yet again our endurance athletes outperform for HiElbow. Bob Davison recently (last sunday when most of us were in bed with a hangover) competed in the london to brighton 60 mile run. The folllowing gives some indication of how 'easy' it was!!!

'Very, very tough, very very wet, very very muddy are you getting the picture. Anyway the race went off as planned and was sticking to my game. Arrived at checkpoint 1 in about 12th place which I couldn't believe but that was only 10 mile in so had to keep my mind on the game. Reached first marathon in 4hr 20ish and still feeling good but after this the game started to get real tough with the rain making the trails hard to walk on never mind trying to run also having to climb over fences (60) was starting to take its tole on the legs and then we come to the map reading which I thought I was good enough at but now I know i'm not that great....but then again there was alot of us running around in circles which in my case I ended up with an extra 6mile in (according to my gps which we were not to use for guidance) total on my legs on top of the 56 they said it should have been not to mention getting chased by bulls which had a few of us diving through hedges..Anyway after 6 changes of clothes, countless gels, salt tabs coke and red bull I could now see the lights of Brighton at this stage we were told there was now no cut off time as only 30 had made it in 12hrs out of the apparently 200 odd who started so now I just had to get to the finish line as the hard work was done....crossed the line in 12hr 55 and 50th overall.. and to join the 81 to have finished the first L2B cross country Ultra'

» Update on Club Kit :
To all that have ordered the Club Kit. I have again been in touch with Spiuk UK. Who have come back with a date(they hope) that Spiuk Spain are sending kit to us. This is 20th June. I informed them we have a club outing on 27th and would be nice to get for this race if not we will be pulling out of the deal and seeking a full return of funds paid. I was also informed that if we do get the kit in time we will  be receiving some form of compensation. I'm still in process of working out what this would be. Fingers crossed and I'm sorry for the delay..... Reg
